Why a total isn't enough

Most screen time screens give you one big number. Four hours. It's hard to know what to do with that.

The useful part is the pattern behind it. Which app you open before you've even decided to. Whether your time came in a few long stretches or dozens of quick checks. What you reach for first in the morning, and last at night. Once you can see that, it's much clearer what to change, if anything.

How it works (Mind Space)

Mind Space has two views.

Now: today at a glance

  • Today so far: time on your phone, unlocks and app opens since midnight.
  • Where the time goes: your top apps by time and by opens.
  • Your day, hour by hour: when your usage builds up.

It's made for a quick look, like checking the time.

Reflect: yesterday, and the last two weeks

  • Where it went: each app with both its time and how often you opened it. 48 minutes over 19 opens is a different story from 22 minutes over 4.
  • When it happened: your peak hour, the first apps you reach for after waking up, and late-night use.
  • Session shape: whether your pickups were quick glances or long stretches, your longest session, and your longest phone-free stretch.
  • Habits & reflexes: the apps you open first right after unlocking your phone.
  • Over time: your screen time over the last 14 days, with a plain-language note like "Holding steady" or "Trending down".

The numbers describe what happened. They don't grade it.

Productive apps

Work or study apps shouldn't make your screen time look worse. Mark them as Productive apps and they're left out of your Mind Space totals. They're still shown in a dimmed "Not counted" section, so nothing is hidden.

Your data stays on your phone

Which apps you use, and for how long, is stored on your phone. It isn't uploaded.

Set it up

  1. Install Yin Yang Launcher from Google Play and set it as your home screen. Yin Yang is a home-screen app (a launcher), so this works because it replaces your home screen. You can switch back anytime.
  2. Swipe left from the home screen to open Mind Space. Before you've given access, it shows a sample day so you can see what you'll get.
  3. Tap Allow usage access and turn it on for Yin Yang in Android's settings.
  4. Come back to Mind Space. Your own numbers replace the sample.
  5. (Optional) Tap the gear icon on the Awareness screen to choose your Productive apps.

Today's numbers appear right away. Yesterday's story in Reflect is ready after your first full day, and the two-week trend fills in as the days go by.

Tips

  • Match the tool to the pattern. In Where it went, compare each app's time with how often you opened it:
    • Opened often, little time (say 19 opens, 12 minutes): the opening itself is the habit. A pause before opening works best here, because it catches the reflex at the tap.
    • Opened rarely, lots of time (say 4 opens, 90 minutes): each visit runs long. An app timer works best here, because you choose how long before you start.
  • Check Habits & reflexes once a week. The first app you open after unlocking is often the one to start with.
  • Put screen time on your widget page. Add the Screen Time tile to My Space to see today's total at a glance.
  • Found one you'd like a break from? Use the app blocker to block it for days.
